In surface, North America is the third-largest continent, while it is fourth when it comes to population. It is named after Italian discoverer Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to realize that the East Indies, as they were called then, were actually a new continent. North American was already imnhabited tens of thousands of years before, and was actually discovered already by Vikings around 1000AD. The continent has some major lakes in the north, and two enormous bays: the Gulf of Mexico and Hudson Bay. While some claim that Central America is a separate continent, according to most definitions North America ends at the Isthmus of Panama. North America is diverse in climate - extremely cold in the north, tropical in the south. |
