As the name implies, Oceania is located in the Ocean - the Pacific. It consists only of islands, of which Australia is by far the largest and holds the bulk of the population - by some, it is considered a continental landmass in itself. It is normally understood to include many small island nations scattered around the Pacific. Although it is the second smallest continent when it comes to population, the area covered by Oceania (including the ocean) is enormous, stretching from Western Australia to Easter Island and the Northern Marianas to Stewart Island in New Zealand. The continent is often divided into Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia and Australasia. |
