The smallest continent of the world (unless Australia is considered a separate continent), Europe has the third largest population of all. The name was derived in Greek mythology from a princess who was abducted by Zeus. It was first used to refer to Greece, and later encompassed also the lands to the north and west of Greece. Europe was home to great cultures like Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, it is the cradle of many forms of art, and the birthplace of many famous discoverers like Columbus. It is the origin of colonialism and both World Wars of the 20th century. Most countries of the continent are now united in the European Union. |
